Safer Roads at Harman International

Safer Roads at Harman International

I spoke to ~60 people at Harman international on Proactive Driving techniques, i.e. alert anticipation combined with defensive driving.

Harman conducted a caption contest within the organization as an appetiser for the talk. There were 150 entries. You see the winning captions in the picture. I think these are excellent captions!

Thanks to Krishna Kumar, MD of Harman India, Neethu and Lekshimi for organizing this event. Krishna Kumar also shared a personal example of how two promising youth lost their lives when driving under influence.

I have tweaked the flow of my presentation. After presenting the stats for the causes of road accidents, I move into a discussion on how to prevent accidents by controlling speed, reducing surprises, and keeping collision avoidance space.  There are short real-world video clips from dashcams and CCTV that reinforce the message.

To reduce surprise :
* stay focused => do not drink and drive, do not get distracted
* be aware of own, and others’ blind spots
* follow the MSM technique for changing lanes
* be watchful and anticipate the moves of other road users

To increase collision avoidance space :
* keep proper following distance ( 2 sec / 3 sec )
* keep space around
* watch out for vehicles coming rapidly from the rear
* be watchful and anticipate the moves of other road users
* avoid clusters at speed

I think this flows well now, if I may say so myself 🙂
